About Loewe Bags

The Spanish house was founded in 1846 in Madrid by a group of skilled leather craftsmen. They were later joined by a German craftsman, Enrique Loewe Roessberg, who gave the house its name. In 1905, Spanish royal couple, King Alfonso XIII and his wife, Queen Victoria Eugenia, honored the house of Loewe as the official suppliers to the Royal Court. They crafted handbags for women in the court that were often finished in exotic skins such as iguana and crocodile. This made Loewe’s products highly desirable. The brand’s ready-to-wear business began in 1945 through the appointment of designer José Pérez de Rozas. who was Creative Director until 1978. He established the foundation of Loewe as a fashion brand and was known for his visual merchandising abilities as much as his design talent. His work paralleled the principles of the Arts & Crafts movement with a strong focus on the natural world. His color palettes were routinely made up of shades found in the environment and his love of animals was incorporated into the displays. In 1996, Loewe was bought by luxury fashion group LVMH, which broadened the brand's appeal.

Loewe is currently helmed by Jonathan Anderson, who was appointed Creative Director in 2013. Under Anderson, the brand started a new chapter, with a bold new visual identity. He updated the typeface of Loewe's logo and changed its anagram to a quadruple-L insignia, a design which references branding irons for cattle and leather. On the runways, he presented his own refined interpretation of millennial fashion, mixing influences from street and pop culture with tailored silhouettes and soft knitwear, elevating Loewe to a new level of cool.

Loewe is set to be the brand to watch, with the Puzzle bag, created by Anderson, slowly rising to it-bag status. The unisex style, with its recognisable cuboid shape and geometric patchwork, has been seen on celebrities such as Beyoncé and Irene Kim. It can be worn in five different ways from shoulder bag to clutch, and can fold completely flat for easy storage. Other new additions to Loewe's line-up of bags include the Gate and Hammock bags.

Leather UsedAbout LeatherHow to Care
Calfskin LeatherLoewe prides themselves on their expertise in leather craftsmanship. One of the more common materials used in Loewe's bags is calfskin leather, and you'll be able to find both smooth and grained ones. While rather durable, it is still susceptible to scratches, so avoid rough use.Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, artificial light and moisture. Store in dustbag when not in use.
NappaUsually seen on Flamenco bags, Loewe's Nappa leather is made from lambskin that is chrome tanned. It's supple and smooth to the touch, giving Flamenco bags their signature soft structure.Remove surface dirt with a dry, lint-free cloth. Store in dustbag when not in use.
RaffiaLoewe's raffia basket bags were also highly sought-after when they launched. The raffia is crafted using a range of materials, from palm leaves, to crochet, to sisal grass from Kenya.
CanvasSeen on their Paula Ibiza's canvas totes, this sturdy canvas gives the bags a roomy, boxy shape, and it's durable and functional. In the event of accidental stains, dab at the stain with a mixture of water of detergent using a damp cloth. Avoid rubbing as it may damage the canvas or cause the stain to spread. Continue to dab at the stain with plain water to remove the soapy residue, until the stain is removed, then let it air-dry. If the bag has any leather trims, ensure that they do not come into contact with water.

  • Is Loewe a luxury brand?

Yes, Loewe is actually one of the oldest luxury houses!

  • Do Loewe bags go on sale?

They do have seasonal sales however the markdown may only apply to a small handful of products or colourways.

  • Are Loewe bags worth it?

It depends which model you are looking for. Statement/seasonal pieces tend to go out of style much faster so if you're looking for an investment piece, go for something classic.

  • How can I tell if my Loewe bag is real?

Do some research online on the style you own, and check for any inconsistent or sloppy workmanship. To prevent accidentally owning a counterfeit, purchase only from reputable and trusted retailers or from Loewe boutiques directly.
